The small 19th century fire station in Boerum Hill, New York, has been transformed into a black decorated loft by its new owners, scenographer Erica Hohf, and her husband, artist and designer Julian LaVerdiere. Si Serge Gainsbourg l’avait fait dans son appartement de la rue de Verneuil à Paris, le total look noir en décoration intérieure est un choix osé que bien peu adoptent. Il a tendance à diminuer l’impression d’espace, et absorber la lumière. Il réclame en plus une application parfaite, car le noir mat est non seulement fragile, mais on voit tous les coups de pinceaux et de rouleau si on ne peint pas parfaitement. C’est pourtant le choix qui a été retenu ici, et ça donne une sacrée personnalité à cet appartement situé dans un immeuble moderne banal. Mais irais-je imiter cela? Pas sûr…
In interior design, would you dare the total black look?

It tends to reduce the impression of space, and absorb light. It also requires a perfect application, because matte black is not only fragile, but you can see all the brush and roller strokes if you don’t paint perfectly. However, this is the choice that has been chosen here, and it gives this apartment located in a banal modern building a great personality. But would I do the same at home? Not sure…
